Classes, Workshops and Trainings for Professionals

NYU Silver School of Social Work Graduate Program

Adjunct Lecturer teaching the following two courses

INTRODUCTION TO MINDFULNESS, EMOTIONAL REGULATION IN SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE

This class is an experiential and theoretical step and study into mindfulness practice, emotional regulation and the subcortical, implicit inner world of relational neuroscience.  Students will develop an understanding of the neuropsychological mindfulness framework and ways to incorporate this into social work practice.  This includes an expanded understanding of right -brain to right -brain engagement—and developing a relational perspective. Class discussion, lecture, video and case presentation, along with practice of mindfulness meditation will be incorporated to demonstrate these principles help students develop an appreciation of a mindful approach.

NEUROSCIENCE AND SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE

Scientific research in the field of neurobiology over the past decade has led to profound discoveries regarding brain systems, neurobiology, and their implications for social work practice.  This course will provide foundations in neurobiological study through a social work perspective, and discuss its effectiveness as a rapidly expanding theoretical model in the field of social work.

Students will acquire a fundamental understanding of interacting brain systems as they influence clients’ behavioral, social, and emotional worlds, and will be taught the skills to apply this theory in a variety of treatment settings.  Special attention will be paid to trauma, mood disorders, and anxiety disorders, though the practical application of neurobiological processes is relevant to students seeking to engage in any empathic, culturally competent area of practice.

MENTAL HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS WORKSHOPS

Listening with Our Heart in Mind. The following two workshops are geared toward helping professionals.

My Rope Dialogue (see below) work is a somatically based approach that immediately engages the heart of relationship at the level of the nervous system.  Rope Dialogues are a simple to work with right brain to right brain approach for making the unnamed named and the invisibly obvious obvious.

The Power of Engagement Workshop (see below) looks through the lens of mindfulness, applied neurobiology (made easy) and Buddhist psychology we will explore a few of the implicit and explicit manifestations of “mattering” in our treatment room.  No matter what model(s) we have trained in as therapists, at the core of our work is a deepening journey with therapeutic engagement.

THE ROPE DIALOGUE APPROACH

Over the past few years I have been addressing a novel and simple way to demystify the knotty predicaments of relationship.

My Rope Dialogue work is a somatically based approach that does just that— immediately engages the heart of relationship at the level of the nervous system.  It gently brings awareness to our earliest attachment themes and nonverbal “beliefs” about connection.  Rope Dialogues are an easy to work with right brain to right brain approach for making the unnamed named and the invisible obvious.

The simplicity of this approach is in its body-oriented way of listening to the subtleties woven into our primary and secondary attachments below the level of our thinking brain while bringing rich and nuanced implicit information into explicit, practical and workable awareness.

THE POWER OF ENGAGEMENT:
OUR HUNGER TO KNOW WE MATTER

“A mother’s body against a child’s body makes a place. It says you’re here.  Without this body against your body there is no place.  The absence of body against my body created a gap, a hole, a hunger.  This hunger determined my life.  I have been exiled from my body…ejected at a very young age and I got lost”. ~In The Body Of The World.  Eve Ensler

How does the question of “do I matter” express itself in our work- both for our clients and as clinicians?  How can we best understand in our body and mind the rich dimensionality of “mattering” from early attachment schemas, existential and spiritual perspectives, and mammalian brain circuitry?

No matter what model(s) we have trained in as therapists, at the core of our work is a deepening journey with therapeutic engagement.  In this didactic and experiential program we will be looking at “how we occupy the space between our self and our client” – a paradoxical space where being engaged is a letting go, and ambiguity is as significant as certainty.  From this point of view we will explore the essential and embodied theme of “mattering”.

Through the lens of mindfulness, applied neurobiology (made easy) and Buddhist psychology we will explore a few of the implicit and explicit manifestations of “mattering” in our treatment room.  Simple exercises for engagement in the developmental stages of mattering, along with suggestions for developing a “mattering practice” for ourselves and our clients will be offered.

THE DNA OF ENGAGEMENT: A 3 HR TRAINING

IMPROVING YOUR COMPANY WITH AUTHENTIC PRESENCE

One of our most powerful experiences and tools as human beings is engagement — specifically the inner engagement with ourselves that creates powerful authentic engagement with others.  During this three-hour training session, Terry Nathanson will show participants how connection with their nervous system and brain significantly impacts the direction of their relationships, both personally and professionally.

Value to participants

  • Become aware of the hidden drivers that hijack conversations and throttle productivity
  • Learn how to access their nervous system  to process the big picture quicker
  • Increase self-leadership and better facilitate organizational change
  • Shift from reactive behaviors to thoughtful engagement

Participants will leave with ways they can immediately improve the quality of their relationships and business outcomes by understanding how to turn habitual reactions of engaging into actions of choice that build trust, loyalty and innovation.

About Executive Coaching

Participant Says,

Terry, Thank you for your presentation yesterday.  I accompanied my wife with no expectations and an open mind.  You brought a depth of clarity and understanding to the way I have interacted with my patients.  I now realize how significant this physical space between doctor and patient truly is.  Honoring this intimate distance gives patients both reassurance and input in the treatment session.  It diffuses their anxieties and encourages their participation in positive outcomes.  Again my thanks for yesterday.  To hopefully be continued….

TESTIMONIAL

Terry’s visit was transformative for the MSW students in my clinical practice class.  Not only did he bring a wealth of cutting-edge knowledge about the intersection of neuroscience and psychotherapy but, even more important, he created an atmosphere that brought them a direct experience of the movement and relationship between mind, feeling, and body.  Terry’s quiet presence, capacity for deep listening, humor, use of self, and vast knowledge allowed the students to open and explore new depths – it was powerful, palpable! What a gift!”
